Partick, Politics and Passions

Freedom come all ye

Saturday night out in the Partick Annexe – community centre that hosts the Partick folk club every month – Burns Supper night featuring Rod Paterson and MC’d by Mick West. One of my friends is more into folk music than me and I’m glad she suggested going as it was a fantastic night. Bring your own bottle, seated at little tables, no frills evening but relaxed and friendly – couldn’t help comparing it to the terribly polite and numb vibe that some gigs in the Concert Hall have. It’s more suited to classical concerts and have experienced some electrifying performances there – the Tokyo and also Vienna Philharmonic orchestras (literally hairs rising on the back of my neck time), but for rock, folk and pop acts not so good – although I do remember a John Prine and Iris Dement gig that lit a fire. The new City Halls auditorium is similar to the Concert Hall , probably great for orchestras and quartets but the Billy Bragg concert I went to last December would’ve probably been more fun in the Annexe – and had a better reception. Sometimes some audiences are too reverential.

Can’ t help remembering eight years ago being introduced to the people involved in the Partick Community Association – sitting on hard plastic chairs in an empty echoing room upstairs in the Annexe, talking about how we could work to get funding to open the former St Peter’s Primary school annexe as a community centre – John Craig took me along there – one of the most genuine community activists I’ve ever met. He died last year and is missed by so many people.
