Partick, Politics and Passions

State of Independence

Is it just me, or is there a strange synchronicity of events – on the day that the partition of the Indian sub-continent and the 60th anniversary of the creation of two separate independent states is being commemorated (Pakistan today, India tomorrow ) , then Scottish independence is on the media agenda as the SNP leadership try to pull off the ultimate juggling act in announcing a white paper that has no chance of making it to the statute book but acts as a tonic to their troops. Given that there is an emerging consensus on more powers for the parliament it’s quite smart to pretend that a “National Conversation” on independence is the way to deliver those powers – it’s a cute way of retrospectively participating in the Scottish Constitutional Convention and rewriting history as to which party delivers devolution…

If only there was another phrase other than Pro-Unionist to describe those of us who have reservations about blithely skipping down the independence road without a debate that’s both serious and factual (as opposed to emotional and simplistic) about what this will really mean.

Went through to Edinburgh to hear Michael Wood speak at the Book Festival on Saturday about his new TV series and book on the history of India , and have been re-reading Jewel in the Crown (one of the best ever TV adaptations of a book ). He made an interesting point about western education and histories ignoring the ancient civilisations of the sub-continent and focussing on ancient Greece and Rome but now there’s a re-emergence of ancient superpowers – India and China. If the 20th Century was the American century then will the 21st Century be the Eastern century ?
