Partick, Politics and Passions

Partick West News 3/11/07

Started the week with an induction session for new Strathclyde Fire and Rescue board members, which kicked off a week that was quite intensive and dominated by council meetings ( as opposed to ward related meetings ) – which made me think about the amount of time we have to spend on issues and in meetings that aren’t always directly related to ward work and the balancing act you have to do between the things you want to do and the things you should do to play a full part in the life of the council. A case in point being the quasi-judicial committees (planning and licensing) which make heavy demands on members time. Not to mention other committees such as Personnel Appeals, which only Labour and SNP members have come forward to serve on . I find it curiously instructive that Green councillors appear to have fairly limited areas of interest when it comes to fulfilling their role – if it doesn’t have an environmental angle then they don’t want to know ? That would explain their insistence on having two places on the Land and Environmental Services Scrutiny committee, instead of participating in the Education and Social Work Scrutiny committee. I suppose that’s why Personnel Appeals is of no interest, after all it won’t save the planet, but it does matter to the individual worker involved… The proposed post office closures were debated in full council this week, and myself and John Robertson are campaigning against the proposals to close the Crow Road and Dumbarton Road (at Partick Cross) post offices – for more info contact me or look at John’s website . He’s also got a Facebook Group – Save Glasgow Post Offices.
