Partick, Politics and Passions

Gold !

Words can’t describe the atmosphere in the Kelvin Hall – over 1000 schoolchildren waiting to hear the announcement on whether Glasgow’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games was a winner. I didn’t realise how keyed up I was until I got there and heard the screams and felt the energy of the young people who were gathered together for one of the most significant moments in the history of this city. They will always remember where they were to hear the news that Glasgow had won, and so will I – there’s no other place I’d rather have been at that moment in time. I’m reasonably certain I was babbling gibberish on Radio Clyde in the build up to the announcement as the adrenalin kicked in – the actual moment of victory was wierd as we couldn’t hear a thing and looked up to the screens to see our delegation hugging one another which was a slight clue that we’d won..What this says is we are confident and ambitious for Glasgow and Scotland and have a vision that says “we can” rather than whinge about why we can’t or shouldn’t .. bye bye to the Private Fraser mentality.. and all the naysayers who find it easier and more comfortable with cynical wallowing in failure and doom and gloom.. I’m so happy for everyone that put in so much hard work and effort to make the bid a success – this puts Glasgow on a world stage – where it belongs.
