Partick, Politics and Passions

Partick West News 01/12/07 – 8/12/07

Planning issues are very much to the fore nationally, (for a variety of reasons..)  but I’ll simply note that speculation about external influence over process is rife – an especially sensitive issue when ministerial objectivity is being called into question. I wouldn’t presume to know all the ins and outs of the Trump proposal, (although it is an unusual call-in from the government ..) and will move swiftly on to local planning issues. The Tesco saga rumbles on and a Public Local Inquiry is being held in the new year to examine the validity of the council’s position on not having reached a decision yet on the Beith Street mega-store application. Just to be clear – this is at the instigation of Tesco and is simply looking at why Glasgow city council hasn’t ruled one way or another on the plans. It won’t be to examine the pros and cons of the proposal – but if the recommendation is that the council has been unreasonable in the length of time taken to make a decision then it would go to the minister for a ruling. The environment is at the heart of any decision on the supermarket plans as the council designation of Byres Road and Dumbarton Road as an air quality problem zone shifted the goal posts as Tesco were required to show how their plan would affect air quality and that delayed the decision.

A contentious aspect of the planning application for the development of the Anniesland college Balshagray complex has been resolved – following strong representations from local residents and myself, the small (but significant) piece of land that the council was going to sell as part of the package for private development, has been withdrawn. So, not every bit of greenspace in the west end is for sale as the council is foregoing a significant capital receipt, but this is genuinely the only patch of greenspace at Broomhill Avenue.
